Crazy Horse Leather: What It Is, How It Ages and How to Care for It

If you have ever seen a leather bag that looks better after five years than on the day it was bought, chances are it was made of Crazy Horse leather. At Sharky Friends, our workshop in Ukraine uses it for most of our laptop bags, briefcases, backpacks and weekenders. Here is what makes this leather special and what to expect when you own a bag made from it.
What is Crazy Horse leather?
Crazy Horse is cowhide that is finished with oils and a generous layer of hard wax. Despite the name, it has nothing to do with horses: it is quality cattle hide, carefully tanned and waxed. The result is a so-called "pull-up" leather: when you bend, press or scratch it, the wax shifts and the leather shows lighter tones underneath.
The leather we use is about 1.5 mm thick, soft but dense, with a matte, slightly waxy surface that feels a bit like nubuck. That thickness is the sweet spot for everyday bags: sturdy enough to hold its shape with a 15.6" or 17" laptop inside, yet still pleasant to carry.
Why it looks "vintage" from day one
The signature feature of Crazy Horse is its living surface. Light marks, folds and scuffs appear quickly and become part of the bag's character. A small scratch can usually be rubbed out with your thumb: the warmth spreads the wax back over it. Over months of use the leather darkens, gains a soft sheen and develops a patina that is unique to the way you carry it.
This is exactly why people choose it. Two Crazy Horse bags of the same model will look different after a year, because each one tells the story of its owner.
Pros and cons
What you get:
- a distinctive, rugged look that only gets better with age;
- scratches that blend in or can be buffed out instead of ruining the bag;
- good resistance to light rain thanks to the wax finish;
- a soft, comfortable feel and a bag that keeps its shape;
- long service life: a well-made leather bag lasts for many years.
What to keep in mind:
- it is not for people who want a bag to stay perfectly uniform: marks and color changes are part of the deal;
- it is water-resistant, not waterproof, so avoid soaking it;
- it costs more than synthetic or corrected-grain leather, because both the hide and the finishing are higher quality.
How to care for a Crazy Horse leather bag
Care is simple and takes a few minutes a year:
- wipe off dust and dirt with a soft, slightly damp cloth;
- if the bag gets wet, let it dry naturally at room temperature, away from radiators and direct sunlight;
- every few months, apply a little leather wax or a conditioner made for oiled or pull-up leather, then buff it with a soft cloth;
- to hide a fresh scratch, rub it gently with your fingers or a dry cloth.
Many owners prefer not to remove the marks at all. That patina is what makes a Crazy Horse bag personal, and it is the reason such bags are often passed down rather than replaced.
